What is laser engraving?
Laser engraving technology utilizes a high-powered laser beam to permanently etch or mark an object. Creators widely use this method to design personalized gifts, home decor, and intricate patterns.
What type of equipment do you use?
We currently use three specialized lasers from the xTool lineup:
- 40W Diode laser
- 60W MOPA laser
- 5W 355 nm UV laser
For materials that aren’t laser-safe, we also have a Cricut (Model: TBA), as well as a variety of standard woodshop tools.
What materials can be laser engraved?
We engrave a diverse range of materials including acrylic, ceramic, glass, leather, metal, stone, and wood. Because we utilize three distinct laser technologies—Diode, MOPA, and UV—we can achieve unique, high-precision finishes tailored to almost any project:
The Overlap: All three of our lasers share the ability to engrave common, versatile materials like select plastics, sealed wood, and certain leather goods.
Diode Laser: Our go-to workhorse for organic materials, excelling at deep, rich engraving and cutting on wood, cutting specific acrylics, and marking leather.
MOPA (Fiber) Laser: Highly specialized for metals and hard plastics. It offers incredible speed and precision on stainless steel, aluminum, and brass, and features advanced frequency controls that allow us to achieve unique color marking on specific metals.
UV Laser: Known as our “cold engraving” specialist. It uses a high-absorption wavelength that marks delicate materials—like glass, sensitive plastics, and crystals—without heat damage, ensuring incredibly crisp, flawless details.
What cannot be laser engraved?
There are a few reasons we can’t cut or engrave certain materials.
Chemical Hazards: We strictly cannot process materials containing PVC, vinyl (via laser), or certain synthetic leathers, as they produce hazardous chlorine gas or toxins that ruin equipment and endanger safety. Similarly, some compound woods contain an unstable glue that release gasses and spray films back onto the laser and camera lenses.
Material Thickness & Density: While our lasers can handle engraving most materials, cutting is right out when it comes to extremely thick woods, metals, and most stone options.
Reflective or Structural Constraints: Certain highly reflective or structurally unstable chemical compositions simply cannot be safely handled by any of our cutting or engraving methods, without taking additional (often costly) precautions.
To bridge a few of these gaps, we utilize an array of non-laser manufacturing options—including a Cricut for precision vinyl, fabric, and paper cutting, and band saws and other traditional workshop tools for thick, dense materials.
How does laser engraving work?
The process works by focusing a laser beam onto a surface to vaporize or chemically alter specific layers, with the exact reaction depending on the laser’s wavelength and frequency. For instance, Diode lasers burn organic materials like wood, MOPA (Fiber) lasers use high frequencies to mark or color metals, and UV lasers utilize “cold ablation” to cleanly mark delicate glass and plastics without generating heat damage.
Is laser engraving permanent?
Yes, laser engraving is a permanent marking method. The laser removes material from the surface, creating a lasting impression that does not fade or wear off over time, making it ideal for items that require durability.
Can I customize my engraving design?
Absolutely! Customization is the key benefit our service offers. You can provide your own designs, logos, or text, and our team will work with you to create a unique piece that meets your specifications and vision.
What is the turnaround time for production and delivery?
The turnaround time varies based on the complexity of the design and the quantity of items. Typically, it ranges from a few days to a couple of weeks, but we strive to meet your deadlines.
